L… Fischer (Continental, 19th century) PORTRAIT OF JAMES EMERSON TENNENT (1804-1869), HALF LENGTH, WEARING A BLACK JACKET AND WAISTCOAT Signed and dated 1865 l.r., watercolour on paper, oval 30 x 24cm Sir James Emerson Tennent FRS was a British politician and traveller born in Ireland. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society on 5 June 1862. His 'Account of Ceylon' (1859) was described by the Edinburgh Review as ' the most copious, interesting and complete monograph which exists in our language on any of the possessions of the British Crown'.
