Lois Mailou Jones (American, 1905-1998) , "Beach Scene", 1946, watercolor on paper, signed and dated lower left, sight 14 in. x 20 in., framed. Note: A painter who studied at many of Boston’s most prestigious art schools, Loïs Mailou Jones was a member of the Harlem Renaissance who helped bring attention to the art of countless African, African-American, and Haitian artists of the twentieth century. After taking courses at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and Boston Normal Arts School and exhibiting at the William E. Harmon Foundation, Jones received a fellowship in 1937 to study at the Académie Julian in Paris. Almost twenty years after meeting, Loïs Mailou Jones and Louis Pierre-Noel were married in 1953. They lived in Washington, D.C., Martha's Vineyard, and Pierre-Noel's hometown of Port-au-Prince. The charming watercolor offered here is likely of Menemsha Beach at Martha’s Vineyard, a favorite subject of the artist.
