Eliot Candee Clark (American/New York, 1883-1980) , "A Southern Marsh Scene", oil on board, signed lower right, 20 in. x 20 in., framed . Provenance: Schwitz Collection, Franklin, LA. Note: Son of tonalist landscape painter Walter Clark, Eliot Candee Clark was a talented artist at a young age. His father encouraged Clark to experience and experiment with painting on his own, rather than receiving formal instruction. He traveled extensively in the early 1900s, learning from other artists. The painting offered here showcases Clark’s late Impressionist style, perhaps inspired by the work of James Whistler who impressed Clark with his use of color and balance of line and mass. The tonal palette harkens to the influence of his father, with the addition of unexpected dashes of bright pink, red and yellow. Clark spent much of his life in Albermarle County, Virginia, making him one of the few Impressionist artists of the South.
