Harvey Sherman Harris (American/Louisiana, 1915-1999) , "G.I. Basketball" and "G.I. Provenance: Siegel Art Gallery, Selma, AL. Note: Harvey Harris was a Professor of Art at Louisiana State University from 1967 to 1982, who achieved regional and national acclaim during his career. He studied at the Kansas City Art Institute under famed artist, Thomas Hart Benton, and later at Yale University with Joseph Albers and William de Kooning. In 1945, Harris won a competition to illustrate Thomas Wolfe's limited edition of "Look Homeward Angel," and in 1956, the Rockefeller Foundation commissioned him to design the set and costumes for the Louisville Philharmonic Symphony. According to the labels, the two oils offered here are original studies for murals proposed for Fort Dix, New Jersey.
