After Francis Legatt Chantrey (1781-1841). A patinated plaster portrait bust of Mary Somerville, signed in the cast 'SIR F. CHANTRY SC: 1840', 76.5cm high, 54cm wide.
Mary Somerville (1780-1872) was a British polymath and academic writer, famous for her English translation of Laplace's Mιcanique cιleste, under the title, The Mechanism of the Heavens.
