A Victorian silver presentation entree dish, cover and stand, maker Atkin Bros, Sheffield, 1899: inscribed 'Presented to Henry Armstrong Esqr. by the owners of South Pelaw Colliery, Thos W. Dance, Edwin Foster & Trotman Foster in recognition of his kind & valuable services on the occasion of the fire at the colliery, 26th December 1899' of rectangular outline, with gadrooned borders and loop carrying handles to the side, the stand with four swept legs united by an X-frame stretcher with circular spirit burner, 33cm. wide. 2263gms, 72.76ozs. *Notes - The fire occurred on the evening of 20th December when a paraffin lamp set fire to woodwork at the bottom of the shaft. The mine inspector's report states 'Great courage and presence of mind were displayed by the overman and others who twice descended in the cage through the flames and rescued some men who were in a semi-conscious condition'. The date of the presentation is ironic as it was the date that David Harris, one of the rescued men, died of his injuries.
