NICOL, SECOND EDITION, MDCCXCVIII Engravings by William Alexander (1767-1816)Two volumes, contemporary half calf, some loose folios, together with 22 engravings by William Alexander (1767 1816), each depicting a titled scene of China, published by George Nicol in London April 12, 1796 Note: William Alexander was born in Maidstone, Kent in 1767. He became a student at the Royal Academy in 1784. In 1792 when just 25 years old he was chosen to accompany Lord Macartney's embassy to China as a junior draughtsman. The images of China that Alexander produced during the two year journey helped shape the West's image of the far East.
