A RARE AND LARGE ICON SHOWING 'IN THEE REJOICETH' AND THE AKATHIST AKATHISTOS Russian, Palekh, 18th century Russland, Palech, 18. Jh. Tempera on wood panel. Finely executed with gold details. The shown subject based on a prayer in the Liturgy of St. Basil, representing in a circular glory the Mother of God enthroned holding the Christ Child, the latter extending both his hands in blessing, surrounded by angels, against a Church and the Garden of Paradise. Two groups of saints depicted in the lower part, St. John the Forerunner prominently portrayed near the throne of the Mother of God, displaying his open scroll. The composition painted in detail, mostly with tones of green and red, the wings of the angels accentuated with gold highlights. The border illustrating the 24 verses of the Akathist. Minimally restored. 54 x 43.6 cm.
