Von 1863 bis 1871 studierte Ilya Efimowish Repin belongs to the most important painters of the 19th century who strongly influenced the russian school and made her world-famous. Repin had studied at the art academy in St. Petersburg from 1863 to 1871. In 1872 he married Vera Shevtzova and joined to the artist's group of the so-called "Peredvishniki" (the travellers). The artists documented the life of the russian peasants in their paintings. The portrait genre takes a special and important role in Repin's work. The presentation of an affiliated and related person showed his personal reference which is characterized by an affectionate painting style. The present portrait shows the female cousin on his father's side Emilia Vasiljevna Borisova. The painter stayed with her in contact up to her end of life (1927). The 3/4-portrait of the sister Olympiade, as she was called after the nun's inauguration, is performed on the white ground. Her gaze is directed in the distance. She was a nun in Verchne-Kharkovski monastery of St. Nicholas for which in 1890-1892 Repin made a painting «Nicholas of Myra saves three innocents". There are some works of the painter from 1880th-1890th showing Emilia Borisowa wearing nun's garment.
