Qi Zhilong (b. 1962) No. 5, 2009 Acrylic on canvas 90-1/2 x 71 inches (229.9 x 180.3 cm) Signed in Chinese, titled, and dated along lower edge: [...] 2006 No.5 PROVENANCE: Private collection, New York. NOTE: Qi Zhilong is one of the leading figures of the ‘Gaudy Art' movement in contemporary Chinese art. He graduated from the Central Academy of Fine Arts and in 1992 Qi Zhi Long moved to the Summer Palace Artist Village in Beijing where the ‘Political Pop' and ‘Cynical Realism' movements were just started gaining popularity among Chinese artists, Western collectors and international curators. With the intention to revolt against the visuality of the ‘Political Pop' art being created during that time, Qi Zhilong started creating his own series of so-called ‘consumer icons' using oil paint to ‘commercialize' the idealistic female figures seen in the more politically motivated work. His paintings are realistic in style and often dreamy representations of pig-tailed Chinese women from the 1950s and 1960s. These close-up portraits are reminiscent of celebrity photography and are at odds with the Chinese Communist ideals of uniform identity. The heroic scale of these portraits—normally reserved for Mao himself—glorify and glamourize the rank of the female subject. HID03101242017
