Shi Xinning (b. 1969) Untitled (Dressing Room), 2006 Oil on canvas 80 x 100 inches (203.2 x 254 cm) Signed, dated, and inscribed in Chinese on the reverse: [...] 2006 [...] PROVENANCE: Private collection, New York. NOTE: Shi Xinning (b. 1969, Liaoning, China) studied at the Lu Xun Academy of Fine Arts in Shenyang. During the 1990s he focused almost exclusively on his singular painting style, often incorporating Mao Zedong into his work but always with an imaginative and humorist twist. Some of his most notable paintings feature Mao with people and at places or events that are entirely implausible. These works reflect Shi Xinning's ability to combine issues concerning history, cultural memory, Western Eurocentrism and Chinese Nationalism. Although his art features many notable icons and visual themes of the Cultural Revolution (1966 – 1976) and other aspects of traditional Chinese society, his work also reflects a certain impossibility and anachronism that is both entertaining and thought-provoking. The majority of his paintings are black and white in tone, which helps to establish a photorealistic and historical appearance. His work has been included in many important exhibitions of contemporary Chinese art, most notably the Uli Sigg collection exhibition entitled Mahjong at the Kunstmuseum, Berne, Switzerland in 2005.
