Yang Shaobin (b. 1963) Untitled, 2001 Acrylic on fiberglass 54 x 37 x 31 inches (137.2 x 94.0 x 78.7 cm) Ed. 3/4 Signed, titled, and numbered to the underside: 2001 3/4 / Yang Shaobin PROVENANCE: Private collection, New York. NOTE: Yang Shaobin is a sculptor, leading painter of the ‘Cynical Realism' movement and a major representative figure in the field of contemporary Chinese art. He is best known for sprawling, red-hued figurative portraits of deformed and ghoulish characters often involved in physical altercations, wrestling or fighting. These works are a commentary on the intense social-political nature of Chinese society. Over time his paintings and sculptures have become less extreme in subject matter and more surreal, serene and abstract. His works are held in museum collections such as the Guangdong Museum, Guangzhou; Dongyu Museum of Fine Arts, Shenyang; and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, California among other notable institutions. Yang Shaobin's work has been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions including the Arken Museum of Modern Art, Copenhagen; UCCA Centre for Contemporary Arts, Beijing; Museu de Arts de Sao Paulo, Sao Paulo; and the National Gallery of Indonesia, Jakarta.
