1923年旧上海早期的跑马场不仅均为外国人所设，而且有条歧视中国人的规定：总会大楼和看台只对西侨开放，华人只能在栏杆外观看。为此，中国浙江商人叶贻铨于光绪三十四年（1908年）毅然集股在沪创办“万国体育场”。该场地广1，000余亩，中有三圈跑马道，外圈铺成草地，主要供华人赛马之用。此幅照片展现出万国体育场修建看台时的情景。
