Lot includes (1 letter) Charles Mellen to Lottie Sanders (undated) “…..It’s been very cold the last few days and we must laying close to the fire if we would keep warm (sic). The community I should have said the city was startled on last Wednesday morning by the news of the death of refugee children at the Chattanooga depot. It’s a shame to humanity that people will so forget themselves and the lives of the poor and destitute, drive from their homes by the vicissitude of war to withhold the means of sustenance……..The wolves are howling at our neighbors doors, murders are very frequent here, only last night before last a man was murdered in one of the public thoroughfares and his body rifled of some $300 which he had that he received from the US as pay for services. ….Last night two young boys of 13 and 14 years got into a quarrel and one shot the other afflicting a fatal wound from which he died in a few minutes, the results of revolutionaries ….feelings of war and bloodshed not so much in our own country as in Europe. The tales of the French revolution fills one’s mind with horrors…..” Also, a letter written from Charles, but with reverse line reply from Lottie, mostly indistinct. (14 letters) “Love” letters from Lottie Sanders, daily strife, “… (sic) Your suffering of trials and temptations, twill be a glorious day of victory” Letters were sent to various locations, Louisville, Nashville, two to General Hospital, in Nashville, one with a pinned lock hair. (4 letters) to Charles from Lina of Ripley various content of home and soldiers. Also a diary of Sarah Louis Hubby Doubleday from 1862-1904, inscribed Jan 9th, 1862, “Charlie left for Camp Dennison this morning.”
