佛典称释尊在过去世修菩萨道时 ，曾于雪山苦行，谓之雪山大士。因此这一类题材，往往表现为瘦骨嶙峋的老者，或扶膝，或盘腿，此件亦是此类情状。其件用刀大胆而不越规度，剔凿骨胳筋脉、衣衫褶纹。大士面庞内陷，鼻准内陷，而鼻管隆起，额头凸出，双目微闭，五官对比度颇为强烈。眉髯均以卷结堆积之涡纹装饰，以使面部阴影部分更为立体，体现其枯瘦清矍之感。佛家认为沉香之息可以使人想起佛陀的悲悯与智慧，心生欢喜，因而沉香与此佛教题材之间，可说相得益彰。
