Paul Calle (1928 - 2010) and Chris Calle (B. 1961) "The Media Creates Indelible Memories" Signed lower right. Mixed Media on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting originally appeared on the Republic of the Marshall Islands The 20th Century series 60c The Media Create Indelible Memories stamp issued July 15, 1998. When Germany's Hindenburg burst into flames upon arrival at Lakehurst, New Jersey, on May 6, 1937, news of the tragedy quickly spread. Throughout the nation, radio programs were interrupted to bring listeners eyewitness accounts of the disaster. Newspapers published photographs of the great airship being consumed by a spectacular ball of fire. Theaters put viewers "up close and personal" to the catastrophe through Movietone? news clips. No one who learned about it via the radio, newspaper or newsreels would ever forget the Hindenburg tragedy. This example of the evolution of the media into a "real time" delivery of the news underscores its development in the 1930s. In the decades to come, the media's ability to record and report events -- as they happened -- revolutionized people's perceptions of the world. Image Size: 9.75 x 15.25 in. Overall Size: 13.25 x 20 in. Unframed. (B16076 / B16077)
