18th C. Russian Icon of Two Saints. Oil on wood. The female (to the left) appears to be a martyr saint. Martyrs are commonly depicted holding a cross in their hand. The male figure (to the right) is a bishop from Novgorod. He wears a stole (omophorion) and mitre characteristic of his office. He holds a staff in his left hand, which is the symbol of his authority, as he blesses with his right hand. Size: 12 x 9 inches.
