Throughout the 1980s, armed conflicts shattered peace around the world. On April 2, 1982, Argentine forces invaded England's Falkland Islands. Harrier VTOL (Vertical Take Off and Landing) jets and the British navy helped to bring about a British victory on June 14, 1982. On June 6, 1982, Israel invaded Lebanon. On October 25, 1983, U.S. Marines and Army Rangers landed on Grenada to prevent Cuba from communizing the island. On April 15, 1986, U.S. warplanes bombed Libya in retaliation for the terrorist bombing of a disco. In the fall of 1989, civil war erupted in Cambodia as Vietnamese troops left and the Khmer Rouge fought to regain control of the country. The same year, the Farabunda Martin National Liberation Front mounted its final offensive in El Salvador's decade-old civil war.
