This painting was originally published on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 32c Boeing PW-9 stamp issued November 1, 1996. Utilizing such manufacturing innovations as tapered wings and welded steel-tube frameworks, Boeing's successful PW-9 series established the company as a pioneer in the field of fighter aircraft design. The U.S. Army's subsequent purchase of 164 of these aircraft not only ensured Boeing's survival, the bantam upstart was destined to become one of the most successful aircraft manufacturing companies in the world.
