Tess of the d'Urbervilles was the twelfth novel published by Thomas Hardy. The novel was published in December of 1891. It portrays a heroine who is seduced by the son of her employer and is therefore not considered a pure woman by the rest of society. Hardy shows a preoccupation with social class, both working and upper class, throughout his novels.
