Ian Pollock (B. 1950) "Thomas Hardy - Tess of the D'Urbervilles" Signed lower right. Watercolor on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the Great Britain Thomas Hardy stamp issued July 10, 1990. Tess of the d'Urbervilles was the twelfth novel published by Thomas Hardy. The novel was published in December of 1891. It portrays a heroine who is seduced by the son of her employer and is therefore not considered a pure woman by the rest of society. Hardy shows a preoccupation with social class, both working and upper class, throughout his novels. He reflects his pessimism in Tess of the d'Urbervilles toward the chances for Tess to ascend in society. Image Size: 18 x 22 in. Overall Size: 20.5 x 23.25 in. Unframed. (B12493)
