The Dorotheum in Vienna recently auctioned a close to identical variant of the painting offered here (see Old Master Paintings auction, 30 April 2019, lot 548, ill.). The picture assigned to Hieronymus Francken II shows significant differences in many details. In addition to the sparsely laid table, the figures are more rough and rustic. In the variant offered here, the table is richly laid, the 'table still life' in stile and execution typical of Frans Francken and his studio. The figures are also more clearly worked out and the affinity to detail is obvious. We are grateful to Dr. Ursula Härting for expertise and information of the present painting and the attribution to the studio of Frans Francken. Eine nahezu identische Variante des hier angebotenen Gemäldes versteigerte kürzlich das Dorotheum in Wien (Auktion Old Master Paintings, vom 30. April 2019, Lot 548, Abb.). Das dort Hieronymus Francken II zugewiesene Bild zeigt jedoch in vielen Details wesentliche Unterschiede. Neben dem spärlich gedeckten Tisch ist die Auffassung der Figuren grober und rustikaler. Bei der hier angebotenen Variante ist der Tisch reichhaltig gedeckt, das 'Tisch-Stillleben' in Art und Ausführung typisch für Frans Francken und sein Atelier. Auch sind die Figuren klarer herausgearbeitet und die Liebe zum Detail offensichtlich.
