Footnotes: Modisakeng was born in the South African township of Soweto, Johannesburg. His experience growing up during Apartheid is reflected and intertwined with his work. Using memory to explore different themes of history, body and place. Breaking away from the stereotype of the self-taught black South African artist, Modisakeng is a graduate of the esteemed Michaelis School of Fine Art, Cape Town. It was at Michaelis that Modisakeng was mentored by one of South Africa's most famous female artists, Jane Alexander. Known mostly for producing powerful imagery through photography and film, Alexander's influence of sculpture is nonetheless evident in the present lot.
