SAMPSON TOWGOOD ROCHE (IRISH 1759-1847) A Gentleman called Thomas Vigor, circa 1770 wearing a blue coat, white waistcoat and tied cravat, powdered hair Watercolour on ivory Gold frame with locks of blonde hair within the gold mounted border, the reverse with gold monogram TV on plaited hair Oval, 38 mm (1 1/2 in) high Exhibited: Comerford Collection at the Irish Architectural Archives, Dublin, 2009 The sitter is depicted wearing a powdered wig so the presence of the locks of hair around the portrait serve to indicate to the recipient the true colour of his hair. Thomas Vigor was born in 1713 and married Elizabeth Noakes in Sussex in 1714. He died in 1785.
