A matched Worcester coffee cup and saucer circa 1765-70 decorated in the Japanese-style 'Kempthorne' pattern, painted with stylised flower sprays in underglaze blue, green, yellow and red, the borders with alternating blue and gold bands and half chrysanthemum flowers, unmarked, coffee cup 6cm high, saucer 12.8cm diameter (2) (coffee cup chipped, saucer restored) Provenance: Ex. Wychwood Collection. Notes: R.W.Binns maintained that the origins of this name came from John Thorneloe, one of the original partners in the Worcester porcelain company. After travelling to Mullion in Cornwall on a search for soapstone and finding no accommodation, he was invited to stay with Renatus Kempthorne. After refusing to accept payment from Thorneloe, a special service manufactured from the soaprock procured during the trip, is said to have been sent to him.
