HIROSHIMA INTEREST - A Japanese presentation tray to Admiral Sir William Archibald Howard Kelly GBE KCB CMG MVO (6 September 1873 – 14 September 1952) rectangular, wooden tray finely carved with temples, deer, bridges and further buildings within a wooded landscape, the reverse inscribed 'His Excellency Admiral Sir Howard Kelly, With best wishes from Governor Shirane Hiroshima Prefecture, Oct. 26, 1931' 60cm wide x 43cm high *Shortly after this tray was presented, Admiral Kelly was on board the minesweeper HMS Petersfield when it ran aground at Tungyung Island in November 1931 - all aboard were rescued. Then, following the 28 January Incident, he used his influence to seek a ceasefire between the Chinese and Japanese forces. He retired in 1936.
