John 'Mad Jack' Mytton (30 September 1796 – 29 March 1834) a hand written and later transcribed letter presented in a mid-late 19th century leather bound volume 'Autograph Letter of John Mytton Esq', the letter detailing correspondence from Mytton reflecting on acute financial woes and his need to raise funds by the sale of 'divers' and young horses, in a note of pessimism on what the account will fetch he remarks, 'had i not better employ a more humble auctioneer'. The letter and transcription presented alongside portrait etchings of Mytton, the folio inside cover bearing a ' Joel Spitz Collection;' label, item, with ex libris plates for John L Clawson and Alfred Marmore Maclay . Mad Jack Mytton was a famous spendthrift and excentric, known for famously once trying to cure a case of the hiccups by alighting his shirt during a visit to Calais.
