Sir William Fettes Douglas, (1822-1891), Winter Scheveningen, watercolour heightened with white, James McBain, Dundee gallery label verso, watermark for Fettes Douglas, 24 x 35cm. Notes: Sir William Fettes Douglas (1822-1891) was a Scottish 19 th Century painter and art collector from Edinburgh. He became President of the Scottish Royal Academy and served the National Gallery as a curator. Fettes Douglas turned to watercolour later in his career, using a limited palette consisting of shades of grey and brown. He and his contemporaries were heavily influenced by the 19 th Century Dutch painters of the Hague School, in which Hendrik Mesdag was active, and it is likely that he completed this painting during his travels in the Netherlands and Belgium during the late 1870s.
