An Ilkhanid parcel gilt silver fitting, Iran, 12th-13th century, of drop form and slightly convex shape, the face decorated with adorsed horses emerging from cloudbands, a bird, possibly a crane between, three attachment holes, 15.1cm. high x 12.6cm. diam. Provenance: The estate of Seward Kennedy 1925-2015. Seward Kennedy assembled his ‘cabinet of curiosities’ over a period of more than six decades, seeking out treasures from across the world, which came to layer the surfaces of his residences in London, Paris and New York City. Kennedy, who was a successful lawyer, rejected the title ‘collector’, instead seeing himself as a custodian of remarkable objects.
