Howard Koslow (1924 - 2016) "Space Exploration - Earth w/ Landsat" Signed lower right. Original Acrylic on Illustration Board painting. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the United States 29? Earth with Landsat stamp issued October 1, 1991. Also known as Earth Resources Technology Satellites, Landsat spacecraft began mapping the planet in 1972. Their primary mission was charting Earth's natural resources. A further objective was to monitor atmospheric and oceanic conditions and to detect variations in pollution levels and other ecological changes. Landsat was a brilliant success, providing mapmakers with far more accurate reference than could be obtained even by high-flying airplanes. Infrared photos taken by Landsat revealed a number of interesting phenomena, among which is the fact that cities form massive heat sinks, absorbing solar energy by day and releasing it at night. On many Landsat infrared photographs, large metropolitan areas appear white hot. Another fascinating Landsat photo reveals Mississippi River pollution entering the Gulf of Mexico, looking like a plume of smoke in the clear blue sky. Other Landsat photos show the only man-made structure visible from outer space -- the 1,500-mile-long Great Wall of China. In addition to mapping natural resources, Landsat photos have helped Pacific fishermen locate prime fisheries, warned sailors of icebergs, and even helped track oil spills. This artwork depicts a Landsat, solar panels extended, as it photographs Mother Earth. The inset is a typical infrared photograph taken by Landsat, revealing river valleys, coastlines, lakes and mountains. Image Size: 14 x 12 in. Overall Size: 19.25 x 17.75 in. Unframed. (B13295)
