Don Balke (B. 1933) "Blue Jay and Pink Lady's Slipper" Signed lower right. Watercolor on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood commemorative cover for the Birds and Flowers of Canada - Prince Edward Island, cancelled June 30, 1978. BLUE JAY Cyanocitta cristata - The Blue Jay is perhaps most recognized for his boisterous call. He screams at cats, dogs, people, and occasionally just for his own pleasure. In the autumn, when other birds are silent, the Blue Jay makes his greatest racket. He enjoys mimicking other birds and has quite a variety of notes in his vocal repertoire, including the screech of a hawk and the lovely tune of his own whisper song. His most common call, is a harsh scream that rings throughout the forest. Bird watchers do well to follow the Blue Jay as he often proves useful in flushing a rare bird with his raucous chatter. Hunters, are often foiled as the Blue Jay noisily warns beast and bird of their presence in the forest. PINK LADY'S SLIPPER Cypripedium acaule - Resembling a lovely satin ballet slipper, the Pink Lady's Slipper is one of the prettiest wild orchids of the forest. However, the most recognizable plant feature, the large pink pouch, is actually only the lip of the flower. Four tiny petals surrounding the sac and a pair of large basal leaves folding protectively around the lower flower stem. Unique and beautiful, the Pink Lady's Slipper is impossible to confuse with any other wildflower. This native alpine plant thrives in acidic soil and requires delicate care and careful planning for good results. Long before Europeans arrived, this native wildflower was called the Moccasin-flower, named by the Indians who were reminded of their footwear when looking at it. Image Size: 13.5 x 14.5 in. Overall Size: 14 x 17 in. Unframed. (B05206)
