On December 17, 1903, at Kill Devil Hills near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, the Wright brothers made history's first powered, sustained and controlled airplane flights. The work started by the Wright brothers would eventually lead to space flight, including man's ability to slip "the surly bonds of Earth" and travel to the moon.
