A CANTON ENAMEL 'FISH' BASIN, QING DYNASTY China, 1800-1850. The circular basin with deep rounded sides rising to a flat everted rim with a gilt lip and supported on a gilt ring foot with a slightly recessed base, the center enameled with multi-colored goldfish amid aquatic plants on a sky-blue ground and encircled by a leiwen border. Provenance: From an old Boston family estate, by repute acquired in China around 1900, thence by descent in the same family. Condition: Some losses to the inner edge with old fillings to both sides (fillings to less than 5 % of the overall surface), extensive crackling to the well, wear, some abrasions.
