A ROSE SANDSTONE FIGURE OF SALABHANJIKA, HOYSALA ERA South India, Hoysala Empire, 1050-1150. Standing beneath a fruit-laden mango tree with one arm thrust up, her face finely carved with full lips, straight nose and almond-shaped eyes beneath gracefully arched brows, her hair caught in a neat bun at the back and topped by a foliate crown. Provenance: Formerly in an English private collection. Christie's Paris, Art d'Asie, 21 December 2009, lot 421, sold for EUR €9,375 (erroneously dated to 12th/13th century). A French private collection, acquired from the above. Condition: Extensive wear and weathering, some losses and natural erosion, superb condition considering the age of this piece. Minor old repairs.
