Italian goldsmith's shop, last quarter of the 19th century (1889), height 45 cm Important trophy of eclectic taste depicting a swan-shaped hull with sides decorated with triumphal and seafaring panoplies and, on the top of the stern, a winged putto seated in the act of holding an oar and a laurel wreath supported by an elaborate stem adorned with marine figures, tritons, masks and festoons of fruit and flowers and, on the lower edge engraved within reserves, the names of the first winning crews. A wooden base probably affixed in later times to house the names of the other winning oars. The "Coppa di S.M. la Regina" is the most important trophy of the first National Championship wanted by the Italian Rowing Club held in Stresa, on Lake Maggiore, on September 14-15-16, 1889 and organized by the section of Verbano assigned for the specialty "canoe with four top rowers and helmsman Senior category, 3500 meters in a straight line" and won by the Savoy oar of the Armida Rowing Club of Turin as evidenced by the Yearbook "LO SPORT NAUTICO" Vol II, years 1899-1890. (fig. 1, 2, 3 ) The prestigious prize, donated by Margherita di Savoia (1851-1926) first Queen of Italy (fig. 4) and consort of King Umberto I of Savoy (1844-1900) who, as the chronicles of the time narrate, attended the event, represents a unicum in the panorama of trophies of Italian sports history in a discipline, such as rowing, which later saw our nation excel in the world.
