PROPERTY FROM THE ESTATE OF KATHARINE 'KITTY' CHURCH KATHARINE 'KITTY' CHURCH (1910-1999) Stonington Masts and Lobster Pots signed and dated 52./Katharine Church (lower right), titled (on a label attached to the work) ink, watercolour and pastel 37 x 55 cm (14 3/4 x 22 in) Anthony West moved to the United States to work as a journalist for The New Yorker . In the early years after their parting Kitty visited most years with the children. Some of her most striking works on paper were painted in Connecticut. Stonington, with its coastline and fishing boats, was a huge draw for Church. In this work Church has minimised her use of ground colour and has created perhaps one of her most ‘fauvist’ works on paper with lively colourful lines defining the shapes. (See J. Duncalfe, Katharine Church: A life in colour, The later years, Harrogate, 2015, pp. 47, 132)
