MADAGASCAR. A Collection of 55 Early 20th Century Photographs, image size approx 177mm x 114mm, including aerial views of Antananarivo and the Royal Palace, Native Studies, Street and Market Scenes, and Views of the Destruction after the Cyclone of 1927, France annexed Madagascar as a Protectorate in 1896,dissolving the Merina monarchy and sending the royal family into exile on Réunion Island and to Algeria. It did not become independent until 1960.
