A wood netsuke of Hotei with three karako, unsigned; together with an ivory or bone ojime, designed as a group of bats and a picture, on ivory or card, of Shah Jahan, [1592-1666] and Mumtaz Mahal [1593-1632], Empress Consort of The Mughal Empire [3]Provenance: The Property of a Lady. From a Private UK Collection. Inherited from the vendor's Grandparents in Somerset, and all thought to have been acquired during the 1920's or 1930's.The double portrait here recalls, of course, the monumental Taj Mahal, built in white marble as a Mausoleum for Mumtaz, from AH1042 [1632]. Shah Jahan also constructed a new city at Delhi [Shahjahanabad]; he ended his life as a prisoner of his son, Awrangzib, in Agra, and was buried with Mumtaz in The Taj Mahal [The World of Islam/Edited by Bernard Lewis/Thames and Hudson/ 1992, refers].Please note that this lot contains ivory, and is therefore subject to all CITES regulations. Bidders and Buyers must be aware that several countries, including the USA, prohibit the import of ivory or any objects that contain ivory. Buyers who intend to to ship this lot to another country must familiarise themselves with the relevant import and export regulations prior to bidding. Buyers are entirely responsible for their shipping arrangements, and the onus is entirely on buyers to ensure that their shipping arrangements conform to all international Cites regulations..
