McIlvaine A24a.Alice Dovey (1884-1969), nicknamed "Billie" by Wodehouse, was an American actress known for her work in motion pictures and on Broadway. She and Wodehouse were first acquainted after he saw her perform as the lead in the 1911 show "The Pink Lady." Wodehouse was immediately smitten, and shortly after would propose--though Dovey turned him down, the two became lifelong friends. Dovey serves as the basis for Wodehouse's character "Billie Dore," who appears in his 1919 novel "The Damsel in Distress."
