Exhibited Antique Russian Icon, "The Great Martyr Barbara". Oil on wood. Barbara, who was born to a wealthy family in Egypt, was shut away in a tower by her father. Despite her seclusion, she managed to become Christian and was eventually martyred by her own father. In Western-influenced iconography such as this panel, Barbara is shown holding a chalice and her scroll mentions the Holy Trinity. Barbara is remembered on December 4th and is called on for delivery from sudden death. Size: 9 x 7 in.
