Large 19th C. Exhibited Russian Icon, "The Protection of the Mother of God (Pokrov)". Oil on wood. At top, Mary appears with a gathering of saints in the Church of the Vlakhernae at Constantinople; Christ is to the left. Below her stands Romanos the Melodist, celebrated on the same day as the "Protection" or Pokrov. To the left are the Emperor and Empress. To the right, the Holy Fool Andrew points out to his disciple, Epiphanius, the vision of the Mother of God spreading her protective veil. This event is celebrated on October 1st. Size: 18 x 16 in.
