Influenced by his friend Seurat, who was a fellow musician, Léon Pourtau (1872-1898) embraced Pointillism in his own painting, the present work being testimony to his grasp of the technique. Pourtau's career was tragically cut short at the age of twenty-five, making this work a rare example of his shimmering Neo-Impressionist oeuvre. While returning from America in 1898, Pourtau was aboard the SS La Bourgogne when it collided with a British sailing ship in dense fog, he tragically died in the accident.
