Description

A Munich inlaid cabinet on stand Inlaid with palisander, brass, and mother-of-pearl on softwood corpus. The cabinet above glazed on three sides with two doors. The narrow stand with a flat apron and eight turned supports. H 224, W 142, D 40.5 cm. Attributed to Franz Xaver Fortner, mid-19th C. Franz Xaver Fortner (1798 - 1877) founded his cabinetmaking workshop in Munich in 1826. He specialized in realizing the designs of architects and artists and was so successful that he soon received commissions from the royal court. Inspired by the elaborate marquetries of André Charles Boulles, he used metal inlays combined with the most precious materials, including tortoiseshell, exotic woods and even horn, for which he had a privilege in Munich. Furniture with comparable inlays can be found today in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the Bavarian National Museum (inv. no. 2004/392.1-2) in Munich or at Stolzenfels Castle on the Rhine. Provenance Private collection, Copenhagen. Literature Cf. Baarsen, Duitse meubelen, Amsterdam-Zwolle 1998, no. 17. Cf. Kreisel/Himmelheber, Die Kunst des deutschen Möbels III, Munich, 1983, p. 128f. This lot contains materials which require a CITES licence for export outside of the EU contract countries. We would like to inform you that such licenses are usually not granted. H 224, B 142, T 40,5 cm. Franz Xaver Fortner zugeschrieben, Mitte 19. Jh.
