Exhibitions L’Impressionnisme dans les Collections Romandes, Lausanne 1984. This work, “Young Woman with a Mandolin”, was painted during Corot's early, Italian-inspired period. It was during his trip to the Campagna Romana in 1825 that he first developed the unique, subtle polychromy that also characterises this work. Although Corot is primarily known for his landscapes, in the years between 1826 and 1828 he also created many of these carefully composed and confidently rendered figure studies that testify to his exceptional talent in this genre. This depiction of a young Italian woman on the rocky shoreline of a lake in central Italy is an exceptional example of these works. The lake is thought to be the Lago Velino, which was drained in the 20th century but was still very large at the time this work was made. The woman's timid gaze, the grey of the sky, and the empty expanse of the landscape evoke the dreamy and melancholy atmosphere that is found throughout Corot's entire œuvre. Corot, who was known for his philanthropy, donated this work to an unknown friend during his lifetime, but it is known to have been housed in the collection of the famous Parisian connoisseur Georges Renand (1879-1968) since the year 1943. Throughout the late 1920s and early 1930s, Renard was able to assemble one of the largest collections of Impressionist and Romantic art in the world. His notoriously good eye means that a provenance from his collection has remained a particular sign of quality to this day. The greater part of his exquisite collection was sold by the Paris auction house Hotel Drouot in 1987 and 1988, achieving a grand total of 227 million French francs. However, following Corot's altruistic example, Renard gifted the work “Young Woman with a Mandolin” some time before 1960, and henceforth it passed through several Swiss collections before finally reaching the South German private collection in which it is housed today. Auf seiner Reise in die Campagna Romana fand er ab 1825 zu der ihm eigenen zurückhaltenden Farbigkeit, die auch für dieses Werk charakteristisch ist. In der Zeit zwischen 1826 und 1828 fertigte Corot, der vor allem für seine Landschaftsmalerei bekannt ist, mehrere sorgfältig komponierte und flüssig ausgeführte Personenstudien an, die seine Fähigkeiten auch auf diesem Gebiet veranschaulichen. Zu diesen Studien gehört auch unser Gemälde, das eine junge Italienerin am felsigen Ufer eines mittelitalienischen Sees, womöglich des im 20. Jahrhundert trockengelegten jedoch zur Entstehungszeit des Bildes großflächigen Lago Velino, zeigt. Ihr zaghafter Blick, der graue Himmel und die leere Weite der Landschaft sind die wenigen aber präzise eingesetzten Mittel, mit denen Corot jene melancholische und träumerische Stimmung erzielt, die sein gesamtes Œuvre kennzeichnet. Nachdem Corot, der für seine Wohltätigkeit bekannt war, das Bild noch zu Lebzeiten an einen namentlich nicht bekannten Freund verschenkt hatte, befand es sich nachweisbar seit 1943 in der Sammlung des berühmten Pariser Sammlers Georges Renand (1879 - 1968). Renand gelang es in den späten 20er und frühen 30er Jahren eine der größten Sammlungen impressionistischer und romantischer Kunst zusammenzutragen - sein gutes Auge macht eine Provenienz aus seiner Sammlung noch heute zum Qualitätsmerkmal. Ein Großteil der exquisiten Sammlung Renands wurde 1987 bzw 1988 im Pariser Auktionshaus Hotel Drouot versteigert und brachte 227 Millionen Francs ein. Das Gemälde "Junge Frau mit Mandoline" verschenkte Renand jedoch, ganz der altruistischen Haltung Corots folgend, schon vor 1960, wodurch es in verschiedene Schweizer Sammlungen und schließlich in eine süddeutsche Privatsammlung gelangte.
