PENDANT WATCH,
Renaissance, Augsburg ca. 1630. The movement marked NS, probably Nikolaus Schmidt the Elder (1549-ca. 1629).
Brass, in part pierced and engraved with flowers and acanthus leaves, and gilt. Octagonal case, the case back contains the bell. Silver dial, engraved with a depiction of a castle, and with the hours in Roman numerals. Movement, in part gilt, with verge escapement, striking the full hour on bell. Later Plexiglass cover. Gilding, rubbed. Repairs to the movement. Movement, possibly requires revision.
H 9.5 cm; W 7 cm.
Dial and bezel, later. Gear train, in part replaced.
Nikolaus Schmidt the Elder was born in Wiltz/Luxembourg in 1549. Several of his watches are exhibited in important museums worldwide, such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Historical Museum, Basel.
