(John Newman, West Kent and the Weald, 'Buildings of England' series, London, p. 542) The present lot consists of two designs for the windows of St. Mary's, Speldhurst, conceived circa 1873 by Burne-Jones for Morris & Co. Speldhurst's original medieval church was destroyed by lightning in 1791; a second church, built shortly after, was entirely replaced by the current structure in 1870-1; the stained glass was installed over the following decade. There is a design in black chalk for another of the windows in the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum.
