OVOID VASE IN POWDER BLUE PORCELAIN WITH FISH DECORATION, FENGWEIZUN
China, Qing Dynasty, 19th century, Kangxi Style
Vase known as "phoenix tail" / fengweizun with stretched ovoid belly and trumpet neck. Powdered blue enamel on the outside. It is adorned with five fish of various colours, probably carp, swimming among the sea bed with aquatic flora rendered by gilding. Double cobalt-blue circle below (accidents, misses, restorations, splinter at the foot, two short cooking cracks below).
H : 45 cm
Note: A subject, very much in vogue during the reign of Kangxi, where technique serves the purpose wonderfully. Thus, the powder blue enamel is particularly suited to rendering deep water when the gilding, vibrant, reflects the movement of frail aquatic plants.
