PAIR OF BEGONIA-SHAPED VASES IN PORCELAIN OF CANTON, HAITANGZUN
China, Qing Dynasty, 19th century and probably from the Daoguang period
Cookie heels. Ovoid straps. Trumpet collars. Floral lips. Dormouse appliqué collars. Applique shoulders of lizards / cyan and pink dragons. Polychrome enamelled decoration in the style of the "Rose Family" and designed in mirror. It shows armies to the bearers of banners inscribed with ideograms. At their heads, generals straddling their mounts (a restored squirrel tail on one vase, a shard of lip on the same one, an erased ideogram on the other vase, faded gilding on both).
H: 45 cm
Note: On the banners, the presence of ideograms should be noted. It seems that the scene represented here can be taken from the "Book of Jin" (晋书) covering the history of the Jin Dynasty (265-420) and compiled in 648 by Chancellor Fang Xuanling.
