|密乘经典记载，莲花生大士是三世诸佛的总集化现，为利益世间众生而降临娑婆世界。莲花生大士集智慧、慈悲和伏恶的力量于一身，拥有无边的法力，祈祷莲师有不可思议的功德。莲花生大士于西元八世纪应藏王赤松德赞迎请入藏弘法，创立了西藏第一座佛、法、僧三宝齐全的佛教寺院—桑耶寺。他教导藏族弟子学习译经，从印度迎请无垢友等大德入藏，将重要显密经论译成藏文，创建显密经院及密宗道场，奠定了西藏佛教的基础。
