Attributed to Peeter van Bredael (Antwerp 1629-1719) A village kermesse oil on canvas 68.7 x 96.8cm (27 1/16 x 38 1/8in). Footnotes: The present sizable canvas can be compared to Peeter van Bredael's more ambitious and successful compositions. Often incorporating imaginary ruins taken from Italian architectural models, this composition is closer to those rarer examples of his work in which the village square is located entirely in the artist's native country. It is also typical of his highly imaginative, busy market scenes illustrating the diversified spectrum of every day town life, for which he was well known.
