* A QAJAR LACQUERED PAPIER-MÂCHÉ PANEL: THE SHAH HUNTING PROPERTY FROM AN IMPORTANT PRIVATE EUROPEAN COLLECTOR Iran, mid to late 19th century Of rectangular shape, lacquered, polychrome-painted and heightened in gold, the horizontal composition portraying the Shah (possibly Mohammad Shah Qajar, r. 1834 - 1848) on his white steed in the typical Persian topos of the hunt, one of his men attacked by a jaguar, more attendants joining the scene from both left and right, the composition quite typical of Fath 'Ali Shah's period and commonly reproduced on 19th-century lacquered panels, in the background tall mountains, the scene set within a nasta'liq calligraphic border with golden roundels and red rulings, mounted, glazed and framed, 47cm x 63.5cm including the frame.
